342,745 Ways to Herd Cats, OR tl;dr

A reading challenge, courtesy someone I don't know!

My ten book list:

1. Suite Francaise, Irene Nemirovsky
2. Good Omens, Terry Pratchett
3. The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson
4. Hamlet, William Shakespeare
5. Les Miserables, Victor Hugo
6. The Mummy, The Will, And The Crypt, John Bellairs
7. Gone With The Wind, Margaret Mitchell
8. High Fidelity, Nick Hornby
9. The Handmaiden's Tale, Margaret Atwood
10. The House On Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros

My chosen 3+ (bear in mind the comprehensive list is now 500+; that's like unleashing a kid in a candy store or a bull in a china shop):

1. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Susanna Clarke (ok, it was on my upcoming list anyway)
2. Middlesex, Jeffrey Eugenides (recommended by this person)
3. Everything Is Illuminated, Jonathan Safran Foer (recommended by this person)
4. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Patrick Suskind (recommended here)

There will probably be more.

Out of your list, I loved Gone with the Wind, Good Omens, Hamlet and High Fidelity (Major Nick Hornby fan).

Your to be read one: both Jonathan Strange and Middlesex were DNF - although my Greek friend says Middlesex is one of the best books she ever read. I am looking forward to your opinion on those.

Perfume is amazing. Easily one of the best books I have ever read.

Fun stuff! I'll write my lists tomorrow.

Let's see, of your 10 I've loved: 3, 5, 6, 7, 9. I read 4 and 8 but didn't love-love (liked).

(does Shakespeare count as a book?)

You know how I felt about Jonathan Strange (LOVED)... and for the record, I absolutely could not believe how great Middlesex was. Brilliant. LOVED.

I definitely want to read Perfume.

Either my list is unoriginal, or there's a lot of folks reading this with good taste! :)

I do feel like I'm cheating a bit with my TBR list, since I actually already own the first three but haven't gotten around to reading them yet, but it'll get me going on them so it's a good start.

I've read 6 of your 10 (# 1, 4,5,7,8 and 9) and I wouldn't have put any of them on a top ten list. Interesting...I find it especially interesting that my opinions differ so much from Daph's!
